Its hilarious misanthropy makes it the most modern of 19th Century comedies. Sullivan’s collaborator on the Savoy operas was also the author of this unique comedy, which, at its premiere in 1877 at the Haymarket, divided the press. But in spite of those critics who confessed themselves to be scandalised by its “cynicism” and “heartlessness”, it was immensely successful and frequently revived during the Victorian era.
